Pilot Project “Smart eco-social villages”
On a proposal from the European Parliament, the European Commission has entrusted the Smart eco-social villages pilot project to the Ecorys consortium, Origin for Sustainability and R.E.D.
The project, which began in early 2018, will end in April 2019.
The digital economy, if developed in an innovative, integrated and inclusive way, can improve the quality of life of rural citizens and thereby contribute to the challenges of rural territories.
It appears that the “Smart Villages” approach will influence the preparation of future EU and national policies.
The “Pilot Project” is divided into four phases :
1. Identify and map opportunities and challenges in rural areas across the EU;
2. Write a definition of “Smart eco-social Village”;
3. Detail existing good practices: a dozen good practices will be identified and analyzed;
4. Study how to become a “Smart Village”: six case studies will receive support for the implementation of an action plan, including roadmaps to start the process to become a “Smart eco-social village” “.
The results will be included in a report summarizing the main opportunities and challenges of rural areas, the definition of “smart villages” and lessons learned from best practices and case studies.
